Why Mount Democrat?
Mount Democrat is the westernmost of the four 14,000-foot summits that rise above Kite Lake near the old mining town of Alma. At 14,154 feet, it is a short but steep climb. The standard East Slope route covers just 4 miles round trip with 2,150 feet of gain, because the trailhead already sits at 12,000 feet. 14ers.com rates the route Class 2, which means you will hike on loose, rocky trail and occasionally use your hands for balance. There is no technical climbing. The Kite Lake Trailhead and the Democrat trail became public National Forest land after The Conservation Fund bought them from a private owner in 2023 and transferred them to the Forest Service. Democrat is a great choice if you want a short day with a real mountain feel, and many hikers use it as the first stop on the DeCaLiBron loop.

Directions
From Denver, take US 285 South to Fairplay, then turn north on Colorado 9 and drive to Alma. In the middle of Alma, turn west onto County Road 8 at the small Kite Lake sign across from the Caniglia Real Estate building. Drive through a residential area and continue about 6 miles to Kite Lake. You can also reach Alma from Interstate 70 by taking Colorado 9 south through Breckenridge and over Hoosier Pass.
Road Access
County Road 8 is a dirt road with washboard sections. 14ers.com rates it as passable for a two-wheel-drive vehicle with good clearance when the road is dry. The Forest Service regraded the final 1.15 miles in 2025 and 2026, and hikers in August and September 2026 reported that passenger cars could reach the new lot. The road closed for construction in fall 2025 and again in June and July 2026, so check for closures before you go. In winter, the road is closed at the Paris Mill site, which is about 3 miles below Kite Lake.
Parking Information
- A new, larger parking lot opened at Kite Lake in August 2026 after the Forest Service rebuilt the upper road. There are vault toilets at the trailhead and a small Forest Service campground with five sites. There is no drinking water and no trash service, so bring everything you need and pack out your trash. When the lot is full, hikers park along the road below the trailhead.

- There is an $8 day-use fee in summer. In 2026, hikers paid at a signed fee station on the road below the trailhead. Bring cash in case the envelopes or the machine are unavailable. Camping at Kite Lake has a separate nightly fee.
Pro Tip: On summer weekends, the lot has been full by about 4:30 a.m. Arrive before 4:30 a.m. or camp nearby the night before. Weekdays after Labor Day are much quieter.
The Route
Mount Democrat via East Slope
Class 2
This is an out-and-back route. You will walk past Kite Lake, climb through old mining ruins, and follow switchbacks up the east slope to the saddle between Democrat and Mount Cameron at about 13,400 feet. From the saddle, the trail turns west and climbs a steep, rocky slope to the summit ridge near 13,900 feet. You will gain 2,150 feet over about 2 miles to the summit.
From the parking area, follow the blocked road north past the lake and a few campsites. You will climb to the Kentucky Belle Mine at 12,400 feet, where a collapsed mine shack sits beside the trail. Above the mine, the trail climbs a rugged slope and then a few switchbacks. Near 13,000 feet, the trail turns right and heads north across the east slope to the broad saddle between Democrat and Cameron. The whole hike is above treeline, so the views start right away.
At the saddle, turn left and follow the trail west up the ridge. After about 200 feet of climbing, the trail turns left and makes a long traverse to the southwest across the slope. The terrain then gets steeper, with a few small switchbacks on loose rock. This is the Class 2 part of the hike. Take short steps, test your footing, and watch for rocks kicked loose by hikers above you. The trail tops out on the summit ridge near 13,900 feet.
From the summit ridge, walk over to the final pitch and follow the trail up to the top. The summit looks across the basin to Cameron, Lincoln, and Bross. Take a few minutes to eat, drink, and celebrate. You just climbed a 14er with only 2 miles of trail.
Descent
Retrace your steps to the saddle and down the east slope to Kite Lake. The steep section below the summit ridge is loose, so go slowly and keep your weight over your feet. Most hikers need 1 to 2 hours for the descent. If you feel strong and the weather is clear, you can continue from the saddle to Mount Cameron and Mount Lincoln instead, but read the private land notes for those summits first.

Short Round Trip
At 4 miles round trip, this is one of the shortest standard 14er routes in Colorado. You can be back at the car before lunch.
High Starting Point
Kite Lake sits at 12,000 feet, so you only need to gain 2,150 feet. You are above treeline from the first step.
Public Land
The Kite Lake Trailhead and the Democrat trail became public National Forest land in 2023. That makes Democrat the most straightforward summit to plan at Kite Lake.
Easy to Follow
The trail is obvious and heavily used. 14ers.com rates route finding as low for the entire route.
An Honest First Class 2
The steep, loose section below the summit is short. It is a good way to learn Class 2 footing without a long day of boulder hopping.
When to Go
Best Time of Year
July through early September
These months offer the safest conditions for beginners with minimal snow coverage and the most predictable weather patterns. Mid-July to mid-August is peak season with the best trail conditions.
Caution: Attempting this peak in June or late September significantly increases difficulty due to snow conditions. Winter attempts require mountaineering skills.
Time of Day
The hike is short, but parking fills very early and storms often build over the Mosquito Range by late morning. An early start gets you a parking spot and puts you back below the saddle before noon.
Sunrise Bonus: Starting early often means watching the first light hit Democrat and Bross while you climb past Kite Lake.
Weather Considerations
Colorado mountain weather is unpredictable. The entire route is above treeline, and the summit ridge offers no shelter from lightning. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August. Plan to be off the summit by late morning, and turn around at the saddle if clouds are building.
Pro Tips
Watch Your Step Up High
The steep slope below the summit ridge has loose rock. Stay on the main trail, avoid shortcuts, and do not stand directly below other hikers.
Respect the Neighbors
Old mining claims surround Kite Lake. Stay on the trail, leave mine ruins and equipment alone, and never enter old mine shafts or prospect holes.
Save Energy for the Descent
Going down the loose section is harder than going up for many beginners. Trekking poles help a lot on this peak.
